Core components, and how long they last.

Most electrical bills trace back to one of these — knowing the typical lifespan is the difference between an expected replacement and a surprise.

Main panel 25–40 years

Often replaced not because it fails, but because it can't support modern load (EV chargers, heat pumps, added circuits).

Circuit breakers 30–40 years

A breaker that trips often isn't wearing out — it's telling you the circuit is overloaded.

Copper branch wiring 50+ years

Rarely the point of failure; connections and terminations fail long before the wire itself.

Aluminum branch wiring Higher risk, often replaced sooner

Common in homes built in the 1960s–70s; expands and contracts differently than copper, loosening connections over time.

Outlets and switches 15–25 years

Wear is mechanical — from being plugged into and flipped — not electrical.

GFCI / AFCI devices 10–15 years

Should be tested monthly; a device that won't reset after testing needs replacing, not resetting harder.

Smoke / CO detectors 10 years

A code and safety item as much as an electrical one — replace on the manufacture date, not just when it chirps.

Overloaded circuit trips

The most common electrical call — usually solved by rebalancing load across circuits, not rewiring anything.

Aluminum wiring connection failures

Loose connections at outlets and switches can overheat; often addressed with approved connectors rather than a full rewire.

GFCI nuisance tripping

Ground faults, moisture, or an aging device itself can cause frequent trips even with nothing actually wrong downstream.

Panel corrosion

Humid climates and coastal areas accelerate corrosion on breaker contacts and bus bars.

Code-triggered panel upgrades

Adding a large new load (EV charger, hot tub, heat pump) can force a panel upgrade even if the existing panel was working fine.

The Science

Voltage drop scales with distance

Longer circuit runs need thicker wire to avoid overheating — which is why the cost of "just running power" to a spot depends on distance, not only outlet count.

Breakers protect wires, not devices

A breaker trips at the wire's safe current limit. A breaker that trips often is telling you about the circuit's load, not the breaker's quality.

Aluminum and copper expand differently

That differential movement loosens aluminum wiring connections over time, which is why older aluminum-wired homes see more connection-related faults than copper-wired ones of the same age.

Grounding gives fault current somewhere safe to go

It's a safety system, not a formality — a proper ground is what actually trips a breaker before a fault becomes a shock.

Adding one big new load — an EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub — can force a full panel upgrade even if every existing circuit was working fine.
